ST. LOUIS — Though rainy weather impacted the November 2013 groundbreaking of the new Recreation and Wellness Center at the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), the area’s harsh winter weather has not disrupted the facility’s overall construction schedule.
ST. LOUIS — St. Louis-based HOK recently revealed design plans for the new Campus Renewal Project, a 10-year project that will transform the Washington University Medical Center (WUMC). The campus includes Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine. The construction and renovation project will encompass all three institutions, focusing on improving the patient and family experience from both a clinical and research perspective.
BEND, Ore. — The Central Oregon Community College (COCC) Health Careers Center, designed by Yost Grube Hall Architecture (YGH) of Portland, recently received a Hammurabi Award from the Masonry and Ceramic Tile Institute of Oregon. The award was first given in 1971, and recognizes architects and contractors for design excellence in the use of masonry.
PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University has broken ground the new, state-of-the-art Clean Technology Laboratory Building. The 96,000-square-foot, $52.8 million facility will eventually contain the school’s science and engineering programs, and provide a space for students and researchers to tackle a variety of global and environmental challenges.
TRENTON, N.J. — Voters in 11 of 13 New Jersey school districts approved requests for more money towards school construction projects. The 11 approved bond proposals total $116 million in construction costs and are eligible for $50 million in state subsidies, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association. The money will fund projects ranging from roof replacements to energy system upgrades to security improvements.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — residents rallied for school construction funds at Lawyers Mall in Annapolis last Thursday. County Executive Isiah Leggett, Superintendent Joshua P. Starr, and other county and school leaders gathered with about 200 parents, students and other members of the community to fight for House Bill 1323, which would direct money toward aging and overcrowded school buildings.
LOMA LINDA, Calif. — A new seven-level parking structure on the Loma Linda University Medical Center campus was completed more than a year ahead of schedule. The $20.3 million garage project contains nearly 1,200 parking stalls, and is a key component in the school’s 10-year, $800 million capital improvement plan.
RENO, Nev. — The University of Nevada at Reno is now home to the nation’s largest seismic simulation and research facility, and the second largest earthquake research facility in the world.
The university recently moved three 27-ton shake tables to the newly expanded three-story Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. The 14- by 14-foot shake tables are large platforms controlled by hydraulic jacks that work in tandem with a computerized simulation system. Together, these systems can emulate the force and duration of various earthquakes.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Governor Jerry Brown has asked schools across the state to take immediate action in reducing water consumption. The request comes on the heels of Brown’s announcement of a $687 million drought relief package that provides funding for a number of water conservation initiatives.
