LAS VEGAS, Nev.—A groundbreaking ceremony was recently held for a new tennis complex at Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School in Las Vegas.

The $3.4 million Peccole Shuirman Tennis Complex will serve its girls and boys high school varsity and middle school teams. The new 10-court post-tension concrete complex will cover approximately 3.5 acres, and four of the courts in the new complex will be lit.

KGA Architecture is the architect on this impressive project. The complex design was revised upward from its original eight courts to better accommodate tournaments, club play and summer camps. Eventually, school officials hope to open the complex to rental by the public.

The complex will also have the following:

  • women’s, men’s, and family restroom;
  • 285-square-foot coach’s office;
  • 432 square feet of storage for ball hoppers, nets, and other equipment;
  • 103-space parking lot including five handicap spots.

Forty five players – 25 girls and 20 boys – are currently on the high school varsity teams at present. Faith Lutheran competes in the 5A division, which involves Nevada’s largest schools.

“This complex will allow our student-athletes to play the best competition in Nevada and beyond and bolster their chances to develop college-level talent,” said Jeff Foley, head coach of Faith’s tennis program, in a statement.

“Our goal is to develop as many Division I and college-scholarship-level players as we can while having fun and representing our school.”

DC Building Group is the general contractor on this project, which is expected to take eight months to complete.

RENO, Nev.—The Washoe County School District in Reno, Nevada is moving ahead with more than $600 million in construction projects—including a $200 million high school— despite the current coronavirus pandemic and uncertain tax revenues.

District Chief Financial Officer Mark Mathers told local media that the district has planned and factored in a decrease in sales tax, the main source of its capital projects funding.

“We have begun modeling a recession and the impacts to sales tax revenue because of that recession,” he said in a statement.

An increase of sales tax in Washoe County in 2016 from the WC-1 ballot initiative — from 7.725 percent to 8.265 percent — gave the district more than $3.8 million a month for construction projects.

In fiscal years 2016 through 2020, the district took in nearly $150 million in sales tax revenues. However, this income could plummet during the economic shutdown as many businesses remain closed per Nevada Gov. Sisolak’s orders. The district has calculated budgets to see a drop of as much as 34 percent in sales tax revenues in fiscal year 2021.

However, the school board approved a five-year capital projects plan that includes a new high school on part of Wildcreek Golf Course in north Reno, and expansions at Swope and O’Brien middle schools.

“It is very exciting,” said Chief Facilities Management Officer Adam Searcy of the new Procter Hug High. “They are working feverishly out there to build this new school. On a budgeted project such as the construction of a new high school—as terrible as the circumstances have been in all other walks of life—we caught a good break on the timing for that project.”

He added that initial bids for parts of that project have come in lower than anticipated.

The five-year capital projects budget includes:

  • $307 million in major projects such as school construction
  • $63 million in capital renewal projects for paving and upgrading current schools
  • $120 million in debt services for paying back borrowed money for previous projects
  • $27 million in program administration including salaries
  • $20 million in operations and equipment

While the district is anticipating revenues falling $50 million or more a year from WC-1, it is moving forward with plans to bring in $38 million in fiscal year 2021.

RENO, Nev.—Construction remains underway on the approximately $18 million Leifson Physics and Chemistry buildings at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Construction began last fall and is slated for completion this October. One level of each building will receive ADA compliant restrooms, research facilities, and modernized office spaces.

The Leifson Physics and Chemistry Buildings were originally built in 1967 and houses the College of Science Departments of Physics and Chemistry. In support of University and College of Science research and educational objectives, the first floor of the Chemistry Building and the third floor of Leifson Physics will undergo extensive renovations to provide state-of-the-art facilities to students and staff.

The research laboratory, office spaces, and three classrooms on the first floor of the physics building are being modernized. Ventilation systems will be upgraded and expanded, and overall building safety enhanced with the addition of building-wide fire alarm systems, and fire sprinklers on all floors of each building. Due to innovative design, the Chemistry Building assignable space will increase by 1,778 square feet and the Leifson Physics Building assignable space will increase by 839 square feet. The University is using a Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) construction delivery method for this project.

The general contractor on this project is Clark & Sullivan Constructors Inc. and the architect is Van Woert Bigotti Architects.

The layout of the Leifson Physics building will include three classrooms on the first floor; seven laboratory spaces; two laboratory support spaces; 11 offices; conference room; one graduate student work area; and one collaboration room.

The layout of the chemistry building will include five laboratory spaces, eight laboratory support spaces, eight offices, four graduate student workspaces, one collaboration room, one conference room, and a modernized elevator cab.

Additionally, the university is constructing the William N. Pennington Engineering building and is expected to be finished by this summer. This building will have 40 faculty rooms, updated laboratories and a cleanroom.

The new engineering building will cost $91.97 million. The State of Nevada has provided $41.5 million to provide students and faculty with better research opportunities. The university and private donors will cover the other $50.4 million.
