HDR’s Julianne Scherer has been named U.S. Central region civic director of the firm’s architecture practice. Most recently serving as managing principal of the Denver architecture studio, this elevation will empower Scherer to build multidisciplinary teams that strengthen client relationships and position the global design practice for regional growth.

As U.S. Central region civic director, Scherer will support HDR’s architecture studios in Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas to set goals and prioritize shared values that have positive impacts on client relationships and design outcomes. With more than 30 years of design, technical and project management experience, Scherer’s diverse skillset and expertise will enable teams to realize clients’ visions as new civic building typologies emerge and legacy structures evolve.

A recognized leader in the architecture profession across the U.S. and an engaged member of the Denver community, Scherer serves on the board of both the Governors for the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado chapter, of which she is a past president. She is also a committee member for the Downtown Denver Partnership’s urban exploration program and served on the 2025 AIA/American Library Association (ALA) Library Building Design Award jury.

Dearborn has worked in design and architectural project management for almost three decades, and most recently served for 12 years as senior project manager with Chicago-based architecture and planning firm Perkins+Will. In this position, Dearborn worked globally with diverse sectors such as information technology, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and more to create high-quality design and deliverables. Dearborn holds both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in architecture from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt.

PHILADELPHIA—General contracting firm Balfour Beatty has completed its construction of the Pavilion, a $1.6 billion hospital for Penn Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Balfour Beatty worked in conjunction with designer PennFIRST, as well as other partners that included L.F. Driscoll, HDR, Foster + Partners and BR+A, all of whom worked under the umbrella of the so-called PennFIRST team.

The $1.6 billion project increases the overall footprint of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia by some 1.5 million square feet of space in the 17-story complex. The University of Pennsylvania encompasses over 200 buildings spread out across its 300-acre campus.

The university’s Perelman School of Medicine trains classes of nearly 2,000 students, and the nearby Penn Medicine Complex serves as the university’s main teaching hospital. The new Pavilion will directly connect the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine to the University of Pennsylvania’s hospital via both an underground tunnel and a series of bridges.

“From the early design phases of this project and through our consistent collaboration with our partners, Balfour Beatty has developed a strong and longstanding partnership with Penn Medicine through the delivery of the Pavilion,” Leon Blondin, chief executive officer of Balfour Beatty, said in a recent statement. “I commend our project team members and PennFIRST partners for their agility, adaptability and ongoing teamwork.”

In addition to the Pavilion, other upcoming improvements to the University of Pennsylvania campus include a new residential building, as well as improvements to its athletic field and renovations to various floors of the school’s Museum Coxe.
