BarolakÌýhasÌýled pursuit teams forÌýmore thanÌý150 projects ranging from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) buildings and medical research spaces to libraries, studentÌýhousingÌýand campus support buildings. SheÌýapplies her passion for excellence across proposal development, client interviews, and sector-specific marketing efforts.ÌýÌý

Kristen Ward, NBCT, AIA, an architect at the Charlotte, N.C., office of McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture and a member of the firm’s K-12 practice, was honored with the S. Scott Ferebee Service to the Section Award by AIA Charlotte as part of the organization’s 2025 Design Awards. As chair of AIA Charlotte’s Education Committee, Ward has led the Architecture in the Classroom program for the past three years — an initiative that introduces middle and high school students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to the profession of architecture while supporting the district’s workforce development goals. Under her leadership, the program has consistently expanded to include in-class sessions where architects from firms across the Charlotte metropolitan area mentor students on a design project that culminates in presentations at the David R. Ravin School of Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

HDR’s Julianne Scherer has been named U.S. Central region civic director of the firm’s architecture practice. Most recently serving as managing principal of the Denver architecture studio, this elevation will empower Scherer to build multidisciplinary teams that strengthen client relationships and position the global design practice for regional growth.ÌýÌý

As U.S. Central region civic director, Scherer will support HDR’s architecture studios in Colorado, Minnesota, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas to set goals and prioritize shared values that have positive impacts on client relationships and design outcomes. With more than 30 years of design, technical and project management experience, Scherer’s diverse skillset and expertise will enable teams to realize clients’ visions as new civic building typologies emerge and legacy structures evolve.ÌýÌý

A recognized leader in the architecture profession across the U.S. and an engaged member of the Denver community, Scherer serves on the board of both the Governors for the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Colorado chapter, of which she is a past president. She is also a committee member for the Downtown Denver Partnership’s urban exploration program and served on the 2025 AIA/American Library Association (ALA) Library Building Design Award jury.ÌýÌý

Paulina Wilkowski Mack was recently promoted to senior associate at Opsis Architecture in Portland, Ore. With 20 years of experience as an architect and designer across the arts, commercial, adaptive-reuse, and creative projects, Wilkowski Mack now leads as project architect for the Columbia River Maritime Museum’s Mariners Hall, a 26,000-square-foot, vessel-inspired mass timber expansion. She has guided the project through an iterative design process, aligning design with fabrication and coordinating exhibits, building systems and storytelling from concept through construction. She champions clarity and visual storytelling, embraces change and leverages technology to turn complexity into opportunity. Before joining Opsis Architecture, she was also a senior architect with Grayscale Design Studio and a project architect with Works Progress Architecture. She received a bachelor’s degree in architecture and architectural studies from the University of Illinois, Chicago, where she also earned a master’s degree in architectural design.ÌýÌý
